At a glance
- Give a beach walk a destination with the Khao Lak lighthouse.
- Notice the dark mineral sand connected with Takua Pa's tin-mining past.
- Enjoy the lighthouse from the shore without assuming you can reach it.
- Combine the beach with a meal in Khao Lak Center if that suits the day.
A beach walk with something to look for
If lying on a beach all afternoon is not quite your idea of a day out, Nang Thong offers a reason to walk. The Khao Lak lighthouse gives you a landmark to look towards, while the shoreline has a detail that rewards a closer look: patches of dark mineral sand. A camera is welcome, but curiosity is enough.
Nang Thong is also a useful choice when a beach visit and dinner in the central area both appeal. Its setting beside Khao Lak Center lets you consider both in one outing. Choose a particular beach access and a manageable stretch to explore, rather than setting yourself the task of reaching every part of the shore.

The sand tells another coastal story
Nang Thong's dark sand is connected with tin minerals and the coastal mining history of Takua Pa. That gives the beach a link with the area's working past, beyond its role as a holiday setting. Look at the variations underfoot rather than expecting one uniform colour along the entire beach.
Golden sand, trees and rocks offshore are also part of Nang Thong's character. 'Black Sand Beach' does not mean a completely black coastline. If a photograph drew you here, enjoy finding the dark sand in the wider scene. Leave it where it is; a photograph can carry the memory home. A visit to Takua Pa Old Town on another day can give the mining history a broader setting.
Let the lighthouse be a view, not an obligation
The Khao Lak lighthouse stands at Nang Thong and makes a distinctive subject for a sunset photograph. You can enjoy it from the shore without needing to stand at its base. Move along a comfortable stretch of sand to find a view you like, and leave room for other people enjoying the same place.
A low-water connection to the lighthouse appears in older tourism information, but evening does not automatically mean low tide. Tides vary with the date, and water or exposed rocks may prevent access. Stay on the shore if the approach is wet, rough or uncertain. Reaching the structure is not necessary for a satisfying visit.

A little shore time before a meal
For an afternoon outing, begin with the walk and decide afterwards whether you want to stay longer. A book, a drink or simply a seat with a view can be enough for anyone who would rather stop than keep moving. If sunset is the attraction, leave dinner flexible and remember that clouds may change the view.
Swimming is a separate decision from walking. Check warnings and ask for current local advice at the stretch you are using. The FCDO warns of strong coastal riptides, especially during the monsoon, and says to follow red flags. When the sea rules out swimming, the sand and lighthouse can still be the reason for coming; choose another place to sit if waves reach the area you planned to use.
Choose the beginning and end of the walk
Choose a beach entrance close to the part of Nang Thong you want to see. Ask your accommodation about the route if steps or uneven surfaces are difficult for someone in the group. A lighthouse walk should begin with an approach they can comfortably manage.
For a return walk, save your starting point and turn back while everyone still feels comfortable. If you prefer to finish elsewhere, arrange pickup there before setting out. With children, a hunt for the dark sand or a photograph of the lighthouse can give a short outing a satisfying end without needing a long walk.
