At a glance

  • Choose Ton Chong Fa when the walk matters as much as the falls
  • Arrange the waterfall entrance separately from the park's coastal visit
  • Let park advice decide which cascade and route to attempt
  • Keep viewing, rather than swimming, at the centre of the plan

Give the forest more than a passing glance

If a beach afternoon has left you wanting to walk rather than sit, Ton Chong Fa offers a different reason to get outdoors. The waterfall lies in Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park in Takua Pa district, with water descending through forest in a series of cascades. The setting, as well as the falls, is part of the attraction.

Choose it when walking through that landscape sounds appealing to your whole group. If you mainly want to see a waterfall with a shorter published parking approach, compare Sai Rung instead. Neither choice is a test of how much you can manage. A route that leaves everyone interested on the way back is the better outing.

Choose your walk before choosing an upper cascade

Ton Chong Fa has several cascades, but not every level is necessarily part of a visitor route. Contact Khao Lak–Lam Ru staff for the waterfall entrance, the currently permitted sections, the walking distance for your chosen route and whether a guide is required. Check admission and the latest time you should begin and finish the walk at the same time.

Tell staff if anyone has limited mobility, is bringing a young child or has little experience on forest paths. Ask about the actual surface and climbs, not just whether the route is called easy. Make the first suitable viewing area a possible endpoint. Continue only if the route is permitted and everyone has enough energy for the return.

More water does not always mean a better visiting day

Rain makes the decision about visiting more important than the decision about photographs. DNP's national waterfall safety advice stresses following staff warnings and closures when heavy rain creates a flash-flood risk. Get the park's current assessment before setting off, and follow instructions at the entrance even if the day looks brighter by then.

Enjoy the falls from the path or viewing area staff recommend. Keep off wet rocks and do not cross barriers for a closer picture. A pool at the foot of a cascade is not permission to enter it, and swimming should not be essential to the outing. If conditions or instructions change, leave the route rather than waiting beside the water for them to improve.

Pack for walking, not only for water

Wear footwear with grip and carry drinking water, insect repellent and rain protection. Use a small bag that leaves your hands free; put the phone or camera in something that keeps it dry when you are not using it. Take the supplies needed for the whole walk instead of planning around a shop at the falls.

Stay on the marked route, carry litter back and leave plants and animals alone. Pause when your group wants to look around or rest, rather than making the next level the only goal. If someone is tiring, turn back while the return is still manageable. Wildlife may be present, but an ordinary forest walk needs no promised sighting to be worthwhile.

Arrange a return that lets you enjoy the walk

Give your driver the Ton Chong Fa entrance pin, rather than only the national park's name. The park's coastal headquarters area is another destination. Agree waiting, collection and the total fare, and save a phone number so a shortened visit does not become a transport problem.

Arrange your meal after the walk so a table reservation does not hurry the return. Keep water and anything you want during the walk in your own bag, even if other belongings stay in the vehicle. If the waterfall route is closed, decide on a separately checked coastal visit or a day in town before departure, with the driver taking you to the right entrance for the new plan.
