At a glance
- Arrange to meet your boat at the lake; Khao Sok Village is elsewhere.
- Choose between returning after a boat trip and staying at a raft house.
- Check which road transfers, boat journeys and park charges the price includes.
- Travel with a manageable bag and ask what your floating room provides.
Limestone mountains and a journey by boat
Limestone mountains rise above the water at Cheow Lan Lake, the reservoir associated with Ratchaprapha Dam in Surat Thani, within the Khao Sok landscape. You can plan to see it by longtail boat or stay the night at a floating raft house. First decide which appeals to you: the boat pier, dam viewpoint and Khao Sok Village are different arrival points, and your road transfer needs to take you to the right one.

How do you want to spend your time here?
You can see the reservoir on a day boat trip and return to the room you already have in Khao Lak. Look beyond the tour name when choosing: sightseeing by boat, walking in the forest, visiting a cave and stopping at a raft house are different ways to spend the day. Ask how much time goes into travelling, which stops are confirmed and which depend on conditions.
If you want to stay on the water, consider a raft-house night. The setting needs to appeal more than having shops nearby or leaving whenever you like by road. It also takes more coordination: settle the named property and room type, then make sure the room reservation and its road and boat connections are all clear before departure.
- Compare what the complete price covers: hotel pickup, boat, guide, meals, activities and every required charge.
- Find out whether the price is per person, room or boat, and how you will join the group on a shared departure.
Reach the pier in time for your boat
Ratchaprapha Pier is the usual starting point for lake boat trips and transfers to floating accommodation. Get the operator's precise meeting point and arrival time and pass the location to your driver. Khao Sok Village and the park headquarters are elsewhere; there is no reason to go through the village first unless you have chosen an itinerary that includes it.
Work through the connections separately: road pickup, check-in at the pier, outward boat and return boat. If a flight, train or another tour comes first, ask the operator whether the connection is realistic and agree on a buffer and a late-arrival plan. A room reservation does not necessarily include all transfers, and a boat cannot be assumed to wait.
- Keep the meeting instructions and operator's phone number available offline before you travel.
- Arrange your onward ride from the pier, with enough time before any flight or other fixed connection.
What will your raft-house room be like?
A raft-house stay can mean different practical arrangements from one property to another. Praiwan Raft House's FAQ, for example, distinguishes shared from private bathrooms and describes limited electricity hours. Those details belong to Praiwan; use them as a prompt for questions about the property you are considering, rather than expecting the same facilities everywhere.
Ask about charging and electricity, a fan or air conditioning, mobile signal, drinking water, bathrooms and meals. Mention dietary needs before booking. If children are coming, or someone has limited mobility, get details of boarding the boat, walkways, steps and room access, as well as supervision near the water.

Take what you need in a manageable bag
For a short stay, a compact overnight bag is easier to manage when boarding. Protect documents and electronics from rain and spray, and keep essentials with you: returning to the pier for something forgotten is not an arrangement to rely on. If you leave a large suitcase elsewhere, agree on storage, any cost and how you will collect it first.
- Pack sun protection, a light rain layer, shoes suitable for boarding and a dry change of clothes.
- Keep medication, your charger and overnight essentials in your own bag where you can reach them.
- Check that every traveller has a suitable life jacket, and wear yours on the boat.
When conditions change the plan
Before booking around one particular activity, ask about the weather, current park access and what happens if the programme changes or is cancelled. A cave, viewpoint trek, swim or kayak session may not be suitable on your date, even when it appears in a lake itinerary. Follow the crew's instructions and the park's restrictions.
If your group would prefer to stay on land, EGAT describes a viewpoint at the dam. Check its access and arrange transport specifically for it. The viewpoint is a different visit: it will not take you through the reservoir or to a floating stay, but it is an alternative to consider when a boat outing does not suit you.
