Look inland as well as out to sea
If another beach photograph leaves you wanting something different, look inland on Ko Phra Thong. Broad grassland dotted with white paperbark trees fills the centre of this island in Khura Buri district, with mangroves to the east and sandy beaches to the west. Its savanna nickname comes from that landscape. It is worth choosing a visit that actually takes you into it, rather than spending the whole outing at a coastal stop.
This is a day for contrasting places: open ground, a mangrove edge or time on the shore, depending on the route you arrange. Tell your local contact which draws you most. You do not need to see every part of the island, and an itinerary that includes several names is less useful than one that leaves time at the places you care about.

Build the visit around a booked crossing
TAT directs visitors to arrange a motorboat or long-tail charter from piers in the Khura Buri area and recommends asking booked accommodation to help with transfers. Treat the boat as something to organise, rather than assuming a public ferry will be waiting at the time you arrive. A road journey to Khura Buri town still needs a clearly agreed connection to the departure pier.
For a day trip from Khao Lak, ask for the mainland pier, island landing point, return boat and island transport in one itinerary. Check whether the quote is for your group or each passenger, and what is included. Discuss boarding needs, luggage and lifejackets before paying. Agree on the alternative if weather prevents the crossing; the wish to keep a holiday plan should never be the reason to press for a boat departure.
The inland journey is part of the experience
On Ko Phra Thong, the road choice matters. Narrow routes include loose sandy stretches, and local travel uses adapted agricultural vehicles, four-wheel-drive vehicles or motorcycles with sidecars. Ask what your proposed trip uses and how passengers will sit, board and carry their belongings. The island's largely open appearance is not a reason to assume an easy walk or an ordinary car journey between all stops.
If you would like to cycle or walk, have a local guide match the route to your ability and the day's conditions. Take sun protection and enough water for the time away from a supply point. Keep the grassland visit on permitted routes, with time to stop and look. A quieter group interested in landscape may want a different outing from one keen to cover ground quickly.
Visit with people, without turning homes into stops
The Ko Ra–Ko Phra Thong archipelago is recognised under the Ramsar Convention for its varied wetland habitats. Its designation describes fishing communities as well as grasslands, mangroves and other connected environments. That context helps explain why a visit should respect both a working island and the places that support its natural life.
If you are interested in a community visit, ask for one arranged with residents who want to host it. A local guide can explain what you are seeing and where visitors are welcome. Ask before taking portraits or entering a home, and pay the agreed price for guiding or activities. For nature photography, let the guide lead without demanding a particular animal sighting. Leave plants, shells and habitat material in place and carry your rubbish back with you.
Choose how much island time you want
A day trip suits a clearly arranged route with a return boat that leaves room for the mainland journey. An overnight stay gives more space between activities, but make the practical questions part of choosing accommodation: meals, electricity and charging, drinking water, communication and transfers. Confirm what the particular property provides rather than relying on an island-wide description.
Leave an onward flight or another time-critical journey clear of an uncertain boat return. If your main wish is simply an afternoon on sand, a mainland beach may fit that wish with fewer arrangements. Choose Ko Phra Thong when its inland landscape and island setting are what you want to make time for.
