A reef-focused visit
If snorkelling is high on your holiday wish list, Surin deserves a closer look. Mu Ko Surin National Park lies offshore in Phang Nga and includes Ko Surin Nuea and Ko Surin Tai. Its coral reefs are an important reason to make the journey. Think about the underwater activities you want to join and how much time you want to give them, rather than adding another beach name to the week.
A day trip keeps the visit within an organised excursion and brings you back to your mainland accommodation. Staying overnight means making a separate choice about transport and where to sleep. If you are weighing up Surin and Similan, compare the programmes themselves. How the operator divides your day is more useful than a claim that one set of islands is always quieter or better.

Look at the day between the reef stops
Seastar's published Surin day trip leaves from its Namkhem Marina pier and lists several snorkelling sessions, a Moken village visit and lunch. It names alternative bays and allows the programme to change. This gives you one operator's version of a Surin day, rather than a route every visitor will follow; confirm the programme for your date.
The number of snorkelling stops tells only part of the story. Find out how the group is guided, what equipment is supplied and what you can do if you sit out a session. Tell the operator about your experience and any access requirements before paying. Keep wildlife sightings as a possibility to enjoy if they happen, rather than the one thing the day must deliver.
- Ask which language the briefing uses and how the day works for someone who skips a water activity.
Visiting the Moken community
A Moken village on a tour programme is still a place where people live. The listed stop does not give visitors permission to enter houses, photograph residents or interrupt daily life. Let the guide explain where you are welcome, ask before photographing people and accept a refusal without pressing.
Cover up after swimming, keep your voice down and give residents space. Children need particular care: do not ask them to pose or treat them as part of the excursion. Where locally made items are offered, choose something you want rather than expecting photographs in exchange for attention. Let residents decide how much conversation or involvement they welcome; no one owes the group a performance.
- Conversation and photographs are invitations residents can choose to accept or decline.
If you would like to stay overnight
Location matters when you look at the DNP booking page. It lists bungalow areas at Ao Chong Khad and tents or camping at Ao Mai Ngam on Ko Surin Nuea, as well as mainland accommodation near Khura Buri pier. A park booking could therefore be on the mainland. Check the exact location and availability for your dates before picturing a night on the islands.
Read the current park information and latest official notices before confirming travel. For an overnight visit, keep the confirmed accommodation, boat transfers, meals and departure arrangements together. For a day trip, you need the Khao Lak pickup point, departure pier, admission arrangements and cancellation terms. An available room and permission to visit the park are separate things to settle.

Reef care and planning your trip day
DNP's March 2026 marine-park guidance prohibits touching or stepping on coral, asks visitors to take rubbish back out and restricts single-use plastic packaging and foam. Read the sunscreen ingredient restrictions before packing. A small waterproof bag and dry clothes for the return are useful; ask about towels and equipment before filling your bag with things the operator may supply.
Allow a full holiday day for the excursion, without an airport transfer or another fixed booking depending on the advertised return. If the boat is cancelled, a Khao Lak beach visit or Takua Pa Old Town may suit the interests you want to follow, provided local conditions allow. Pick a mainland alternative before the trip rather than leaving that decision until a cancellation.
