Give the town a place in the day
A journey towards Phang Nga Bay need not pass straight through the provincial capital. Phang Nga town has its own reasons to stop: historic public buildings and commercial streets that reward a closer look. The Phuket Tourism and Sports Office's heritage publication traces a route through this architecture. You can use a few of its landmarks to shape a walk without needing a museum visit or a special event to make the day worthwhile.
Make the destination clear when arranging transport: Mueang Phang Nga, the provincial town. Takua Pa Old Town is elsewhere in the same province, and Phang Nga Road in Phuket belongs to another town altogether. Save the actual buildings or streets you want to see, so a broad search for 'Phang Nga old town' does not decide the outing for you.

Start with the buildings on Phet Kasem Road
The heritage publication names Phet Kasem Road as a town route, with Thaweesuk Hotel and nearby commercial buildings towards its north end and the old Provincial Hall and Governor's Residence towards the south. The hall dates from 1930. The residence, built in 1933, began as an office of the Phang-nga Tin Company before becoming a government residence. Their different purposes give you something to compare beyond their age.
Look at how an entrance announces a public building, how a porch relates to the frontage and how the whole structure differs from a row of shops. Plan viewing from a permitted public position. A heritage listing does not confirm interior access, so ask locally if you want to go inside. You can still make an interesting stop by looking carefully at the exterior.

A shorter street can reveal another side of town
Khwang Road, continuing towards Borirak Bamrung Road, offers another route in the government heritage guide, centred on old wooden shophouses. It is a useful change of scale after the larger civic buildings. Choose a short stretch and look along it before concentrating on one front: windows, materials and the way adjoining buildings meet can be as interesting as a decorated façade.
Leave people room to use their entrances and shop space. If you want a photograph from the opposite side, cross where it is safe and wait somewhere clear of traffic. Do not step into a doorway or private interior just to widen your angle. Some of the most useful looking happens between pictures, when you can compare a whole row without searching for the perfect frame.
Let a pause fit the neighbourhood
Choose a food or drink stop from businesses that are open as you pass, or contact a particular place in advance if it is central to your plans. A pause can give the walk a comfortable shape without turning it into a search for one famous dish. Ask what is available, the price and any ingredients that matter to you before ordering.
If religious architecture interests you, the heritage route also names Prachum Yothi Temple on Phet Kasem Road. Approach a temple as a place of worship: dress appropriately, follow entry and shoe instructions, and ask about photography. Include it only if there is time to visit considerately. Carry water and shorten the walk when you need to; the town does not need to become an endurance route to be rewarding.
Choose the town's share of a mainland day
From Khao Lak, agree on a town drop-off, collection point, waiting arrangement and total fare with the driver. For mobility needs, discuss the specific stops and how close a vehicle can get to them; old streets and buildings cannot be assumed to have a continuous step-free route. Save a contact number so the collection point can change if the walk ends elsewhere.
You could give the town most of the day, or combine a modest walk with Wat Suwan Khuha or a bay viewpoint after checking the road route. Choose one additional interest rather than fitting in every mainland attraction. If access to a building changes, keep an alternative that still appeals: a street to look along, a meal, or more time at the stop you enjoyed most.
