A boat day or a beach day?

A photograph of the Similan Islands can make a beach day and a boat day look like the same holiday. In practice, they ask different things of you. Mu Ko Similan National Park brings together white beaches, granite scenery and underwater exploration, but an organised excursion means moving on with the group when the programme calls for it.

If beach stops and guided snorkelling are what you're coming for, an island trip makes sense. If you would rather settle with a book, take a long lunch and decide for yourself when to leave, keep the day on the mainland. Knowing which sort of day you want is more useful than finding the lowest fare.

Beach, snorkelling and viewpoint stops

Seastar's published Similan day trip gives one example: snorkelling stops, beach time on Ko Miang (Island 4) and a visit to Ko Similan (Island 8), with a viewpoint option there. The operator says the itinerary can change. Use it to understand the format, then compare the stops on the trip you are considering; other boats need not follow the same route.

Look for the part of the day you would most like to linger over. Beach time, snorkelling and a viewpoint visit each take a share of the programme. Find out which activities are optional and what the alternative is if you sit one out. In a couple or family, the keen snorkeller and the person less interested in the water both need a day they can look forward to.

What the park currently permits

DNP's August 2026 statement describes visitor tourism in Similan as day trips and diving; overnight stays on the islands have been discontinued. If an older article has you picturing a night on an island, do not book around it. A diving liveaboard is a separate product, with its own arrangements to discuss with the operator.

Current access needs a separate check. Read the linked DNP park information and latest notices, and have the operator confirm that your departure is permitted. A programme can remain online without confirming that the park is open on your date. This is also the time to settle how admission is arranged and which identification details the booking requires.

The journey starts in Khao Lak

The boat's departure time is only part of your day. Get the pickup point at your Khao Lak accommodation, pickup time and expected return arrangement in writing so you know when to be ready. Confirm the guide's working language, too; an English booking page does not necessarily tell you which language the briefing on board will use.

Put transfers, park admission, meals and equipment alongside each quote to see the total you will pay. Food requirements and the terms for cancellation or a changed route are worth sorting out before payment. If you reserve from abroad, save those answers with the confirmation so there is one clear record if your plans change.

Packing and choosing your trip day

Start with a small waterproof bag, a change of clothes and your booking confirmation, then check what the operator supplies. DNP's March 2026 guidance prohibits touching or stepping on coral and bringing single-use plastic packaging and foam into national parks. Its restricted sunscreen ingredients are oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC and butylparaben. Read the ingredients rather than trusting a marketing label, and bring your rubbish back out.

Give the trip a day without an airport transfer or another fixed commitment waiting at the end of it. If Similan is the outing you most want, leave another Khao Lak day unbooked so you can move plans if the operator cancels. Another departure may not be available, so have a mainland alternative you would enjoy too.

  • Save the park-access answer, pickup details, inclusions and cancellation terms with your booking.
